Walking Tour of Historic Salem
Salem, the Village of Peace, was first settled in 1764 by New Englanders James Turner, Joshua Conkey and Hamilton McCollister on land held by a royal grant. The settlement was called White Creek. Dr. Thomas Clark who arrived in the area in 1767 with his Scotch Irish Congregation from Balibay, Ireland, chose to call the settlement New Perth because of its likeness to their home of Perth, Scotland. After the Revolutionary War, and act of the Legislature proclaimed the area Salem, one of the first settlements in Washington County. The village has many historic and architecturally beautiful homes and landmarks. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The map provided at the Brunch will lead you to beautiful sites within walking distance. Begin your tour at the Courthouse which serves as the anchor for the Historic District. Enjoy the homes from the walking paths - they are not open to the public.
