The HSCPA's 10th Annual Membership Meeting
On Tuesday, November 15th, the Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association held its 10th annual membership meeting. The evening event commenced with a potluck dinner held in the Great Hall which was festively decorated for the holiday season. Participants contributed delicious fare which was enjoyed by all. Following the dinner, guests moved into the spacious Archive Room where the meeting commenced at 7 pm.
The annual membership meeting was conducted by HSCPA Board President, Dottie Schneider, who took great pride in reporting the state of the courthouse. Many accomplishments have been made this year despite the setback caused by tropical storm Irene, and Dottie was generous in her recognition of the individuals who made the progress possible. She yielded the floor to Executive Director, Donna Farringer, who elaborated on the numerous events and worthy initiatives and also presented a detailed DVD telling the story of the past year in photographs. The DVD was played on a wide screen television recently donated by Jim and Kim Gariepy. Guests were amazed at just how much had transpired and been accomplished.
The order of the evening was to also elect members of the board as well as the officers for the coming term. As of January 1st, the new officers will be as follows: President, Robert Akland, Vice President, Herb Perkins, Secretary, Karen Sheldon and Treasurer, Robert Sellar. Keith Kelly was elected to the board class of 2013 completing the term of Cindy Spence who moved out of the area. The board members elected to the class of 2014 are Anthony Donaldson, Herb Perkins, Dottie Schneider and Karen Sheldon. They will join the other board members including Sue Keyes, Julie Moline, Brian Gilchrist and John Hickland.

The evening was marked by two special recognitions. Dottie Schneider presented Katharine “Kay” Tomasi with a resolution honoring her past service and declaring her a Director Emeritus. Kay's vision was instrumental in restoring the Old Washington County Courthouse as a community center. She served the organization most effectively as Vice President in 2003, President in 2004 and Secretary from 2006 through 2010. Her many contributions have earned her the admiration and respect of the grateful organization.
Also that evening, William “Al” Cormier, Chair of the the Salem Village Historical Preservation Commission, presented the HSCPA with a Certificate of Recognition. The award acknowledged the efforts to maintain the historic building which serves as the anchor of the Salem Village National Historic District. Progress Continues in the CCC Pottery Studio
The pottery studio at the Salem Courthouse Community Center is making great strides and should be offering classes before too long. Studio manager, Jordan Becker, is hard at work bringing in new supplies and supervising the necessary improvements. 4 pottery wheel motors have been sent out for repair and are expected back shortly. The kilns still require some additional attention, but should be functioning before too long. Jordan feels two of the most well attended offerings should resume in late November. Introduction to Pottery is scheduled to begin on November 28 and will run until January 16. The Monday evening class will run from 6:30 until 9:30 and teaches the fundamentals of pottery. Open Studio will begin on November 30 and will run until January 18. The Wednesday workshop runs from 6:30 until 9:30 pm and provides experienced folks with the ability to work in clay at their own pace. Anyone interested in participating in either class should contact the CCC directly.
The CCC is also pleased to announce the winner of the Hawaiian vacation raffle. The winning ticket was drawn at a reception held at the CCC on November 7, and Meg Kearton of Manchester Center will be going to Hawaii with a guest of her choice on January 30, 2012. Take the Chill Off at the CCC
The Salem Courthouse Quilters have been hard at work creating a warm fall-colored quilt to benefit the Courthouse Community Center. The generous 72'” x 72” machine pieced and hand tied flannel quilt is the quaint “Dancing Stars” pattern. Talented Courthouse Quilters who contributed to the effort are Carol Allen, Lynda Armstrong, Inez Bianca, Romain Guzi, Alice Hurtle, Marge Keyes, Paulette Leonard, Lucille Makrin, Sue Morrison and Dottie Schneider. The quilt is currently on display at the CCC and would make the perfect holiday gift! Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10, and the drawing will take place at the CCC on December 10th. The winner need not be present.
The CCC is also pleased to announce it was the recipient of a grant from the Washington County Home for Aged Women, Inc. to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED). Conferring with Vicky Campbell of the Salem Rescue Squad and Travis Howe, Director of the Mountain Lakes Regional EMS Council, it was determined that a Zoll AED Plus would best sever the needs of the CCC. It's fully guidelines compliant and easy for the layman to use. It is also the same AED utilized by the Salem Rescue Squad and Salem Fire Department. Dr. Dan Garfinkel of the Salem Health Center has graciously offered to serve as the Medial Director overseeing the training and use of this life-saving equipment.

Fear This Haunted Courthouse
Halloween returns to the Salem Courthouse Community Center, the same courthouse that has stood in Salem since 1869. But this year, things are hauntingly different. Fear This, the production company out of West Pawlet, Vermont, will be transforming the staid old building into a veritable “house of horrors”. The indoor event where weather is no problem, will be offered the following Fridays and Saturdays in October: the 14th & 15th, the 21st and 22nd and the 28th and 29th. A special haunting will be offered on Sunday, October 30th as well. Tours will run between 6 and 9:30 pm and are not suggested for very young or impressionable children. The mission of Fear This is to scare. Production team, Rik Sassa and Glen Cruise have been creating hauntings for years. They believe there is nothing more exhilarating than being scared and think it's nice not to risk your life in the process – though they work very hard to make you feel as though you did!
The Fear This haunting in 2010 was a tremendous success, and the creative team promises goose bumps and a heart pounding good time this year as well. Tickets will be sold at the door, and proceeds will benefit the many programs offered at the CCC. Prices are $10 for adults, $5 for children 13 and under, $5 for volunteer fire or rescue personnel with ID and $25 for families (mom/dad or caretaker and children). County Agency Assists CCC
The Salem Courthouse Community Center is singing the praises of the Alternative Sentencing Agency under direction of Michael Gray at the Washington County Youth Bureau in Fort Edward. After the flood waters of Irene destroyed the CCC basement containing the pottery studio and several newly restored activity rooms, Courthouse Board members were numb and at a loss as to where they might turn for the support necessary to deal with the overwhelming damage. Within 48 hours, Scott Stoughton, Community Service Coordinator for the Alternative Sentencing Agency was on site with a carload of workers willing and eager to assist with the cleaning process. Scott has coordinated a roster of workers for the CCC each day for the past three weeks. The work has been muddy and difficult, but the workers faced each day with enthusiasm and a sincere desire to make a difference. The transformation in the basement has been remarkable, and the workers have taken great pride in their accomplishment. The CCC is grateful for the compassion shown by the agency and its workers who have helped the organization get through a difficult situation.

Steady Progress at the CCC
The Salem Courthouse Community Center received a devastating blow from Irene, but dedicated volunteers have been working daily to assist with the extensive cleaning process. Between 8-12 workers have been present each day to contribute to the effort, and those close to the organization are grateful. One of the youngest, Pascia Offield, a second grade student at Washington Academy, re-lettered the CCC activity sign to offer encouragement to Salem residents. The sign reads “life is still good in Salem”, and is prominently displayed. While substantial progress has been made, some of the new fall classes which were to commence in the coming days have been re-scheduled. Due to flooding of the Hop Gaah Kung Fu Academy in the CCC basement, “Sifu” Steven Nacua has requested that students of Tai Chi and Kung Fu keep in touch with the CCC to learn when and where the fall session will commence. Pottery studio manager, Jordan Becker is very encouraged by the work completed in the studio, and feels the children and adult pottery classes will only be delayed by 1-2 weeks. Irene Deals a Devastating Blow to the CCC
The Historic Salem Courthouse complex including the Courthouse Community Center, sustained serious flood damage due to the White Creek surge caused by Irene. There was 4-5 feet of water raging through the Courthouse basement destroying the pottery studio, damaging newly restored activity rooms, and the extent of the damage to the heating system is still being ascertained. The Youth Activity Barn used for Lunch, Learn & Play was covered in thick mud. The Shoppe Off Broadway thrift shop basement flooded as well. The swiftly moving waters totally destroyed the impressive Courthouse Community Garden which was on the verge of being harvested. The Hudson Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for help early Monday morning and spent over 8 hours pumping out the buildings. The Town of Salem does not have flood insurance for the complex, and other means are being sought to fund the necessary restoration. Consequently, the pottery studio will be temporarily closed until the funds are raised to replace the ruined equipment. The teamwork of the volunteers who have been at the Courthouse daily to assist with the cleaning has been inspiring. Donations, both monetary and additional volunteer hours to assist with the cleaning process have been solicited. The Shoppe remains open as does the CCC. Executive Director, Donna Farringer, has said “we may be a bit battered and bruised, but we are definitely not defeated”. Anyone interested in assisting may visit the website at www.salemcourthouse.org to obtain details.

Talents of Jordan Becker, Courthouse Potter, Displayed
The Courthouse Community Center in Salem will be presenting an exhibit of the wood-fired pottery of Jordan Becker. Ash + Clay will be on display in the “Great Hall” from Friday, August 19 until Friday, September 30. A Bennington College graduate, Jordan is the manager and instructor at the Courthouse Pottery Studio and oversees the ceramics program at Salem Art Works as well. Having a great fondness for the Battenkill Valley area, Jordan returned to his country roots after starting his career in New York City.
Jordon is responsible for the construction of Anagama kiln at SAW during the summer of 2010. The wood-fired kiln is heated to 2340 degrees and is capable of holding two to three hundred pieces at each firing. The unique firing process combines extreme heat with different minerals which are yielded from the wood and drip down onto the pottery creating an intense trail of depth and color. The result is truly spectacular. Jordan has said, “wood-firing to me is magic – full of the unknown and loaded with meaning and challenges”.

SAVE Celebrates First Year
Serving Salem
The Salem Area Van Endeavor has celebrated its first year assisting residents in the Salem vicinity. Donated to Salem by the Greenwich Interfaith Fellowship in the spring of 2010, the 10-passenger Ford van has provided a great service to local citizens. A committee consisting of representatives of local churches and civic organizations oversees SAVE, and the van is housed and managed by the Salem Courthouse Community Center. Salem resident, Ken White, generously volunteers as the dispatcher and drives the van on its appointed rounds each week. He picks residents up at their homes for grocery runs to Hannaford in Greenwich on Tuesday, the IGA in Cambridge on Wednesday and the Granville Price Chopper on Thursday. The first Monday of each month, Ken cheerfully shuttles his passengers to either WalMart or K-Mart. Upon returning, Ken carries groceries and ensures his passengers get back into their home safely. There is no charge to utilize this service, and interested individuals may call Ken at 854-7497 to schedule transportation. In its first year of service the van has logged close to 8,000 miles and assisted an average of 20 passengers each week.
Funding to support SAVE comes from generous donors and the proceeds of an annual golf tournament. On Saturday, August 13, the second SAVE Golf Tournament will take place at the Ondawa Green Golf Course in Cambridge. Co-sponsored by the Salem Rotary Club and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will feature two tee times – 8 am followed by lunch at noon or 1 pm followed by dinner at 5 pm. Organizer, Rose Ann Savage, encourages interested parties to register early since space is limited. At this year's event, a lucky participant may win a Kubota RTV 500 Utility Vehicle donated by Salem Farm Supply with a hole-in-one! Golf foursomes are recommended, and any interested duffers may contact Rose Ann at the Glens Falls National Bank & Trust Company in Salem.

Courthouse Community Garden Blossoms Once Again
On Friday, June 3rd, many garden enthusiasts were on hand for the annual Planting Day at the Courthouse Community Garden in Salem. Under the direction of Nancy Hand Higby, Dottie Schneider, Janet Britt and Stephanie Coons Frederick, the garden has been professionally designed, prepped and is now planted for another growing season. The garden is on land owned by Woody Hill Farm adjacent to the Courthouse Community Center. The owners of Woody Hill Farm graciously allow use of their rich field in support of this program. This amazing initiative succeeds with the assistance of many helpers including students from Washington Academy. Amy Maxwell's Agriculture classes have been providing necessary help for several weeks preparing the beds. On Planting Day, students from the third grade classes of Mary Skelly and Mary Kruchinski and the fourth grade classes of Tina Luke and Jackie Gawronski visited the garden to plant the seedlings grown in their classrooms. Also on hand were New York State Senator Betty Little and Assemblyman Tony Jordan who take a keen interest in this initiative. Produce grown in the garden will be donated to the Salem Food Pantry each week. Garden volunteers also take produce to the weekly Salem Farmers' Market, and proceeds support the garden's needs. A good portion of the garden is also used for lunch preparation for the children participating in Lunch, Learn & Play. Volunteers who enjoy gardening are always welcome, and are encouraged to visit the Courthouse Community Center to be a part of this great undertaking.

Loretta Bates to Speak at the CCC
The Courthouse Community Center in Salem welcomes Loretta Bates to speak at the second talk of its history series on Thursday, March 17th at 7:30 pm in the Archives Room. Loretta is the Deputy Historian of Washington County, and her informative talk is entitled Indentures of Children Taken from the Poorhouse. Loretta is currently working on a book with the same title and said "the story of these children is one that needs to be told". Loretta's interest in this subject was inspired by an unfortunate woman who entered the Washington County poorhouse in 1829 with her 9 children. She and 3 of her children quickly died of Typhus leaving 4 orphaned children who were indentured out. In a 30 - 40 year period, about 291 children were indentured in this area.
Loretta has been at the Washington County Historian's office for about 20 years, 6 of which she has served as the Deputy Historian. She has a background in genealogy and started working in the office as a volunteer. After taking courses in Washington County history at Adirondack Community College and gaining much knowledge in the field, she was hired for a position she has thoroughly enjoyed. There is no admission charge for her talk, and the public is welcome to attend. It is advised to call the CCC at 518-854-7053 to reserve a space. The CCC is handicap accessible.

Harry Orlyk, American Landscape Painter,
to have exhibit at the CCC
The Courthouse Community Center in Salem is pleased to offer an exhibit of American landscape painter, Harry Orlyk, in its Great Hall from Friday, February 11 until Sunday, February 20. A longtime Salem resident, Harry has been documenting the beauty of America's landscapes for over thirty years. He can be seen driving the back roads of our region capturing the bucolic scenes year round. Always anticipating the seasonal changes of earth and sky, Harry is led to one painting after another by becoming part of nature rather than a casual observer. Harry has said "each painting entails facing a swath of creation and observing something of it story". His paintings have graced gallery walls across the country and a recent exhibit in Germany and well. A longtime CCC supporter, Harry has also participated in the history lecture series offered each March and September, and the CCC is honored to be hosting an exhibit of his work.
Coinciding with the opening of Harry's artwork, the CCC will be hosting its Beat the Winter Blues event on Friday, February 11 at 6:30 pm. The enjoyable winter fundraiser will offer wine and delicious hors d'oeuvres while listening to melodic Americana music provided by Cradle Switch. Contra Dance – Try Something New and Fun at the CCC!
On Friday, January 28th at 7 pm, join your friends at the Courthouse Community Center in Salem for something new and very enjoyable. Contra dancing will be offered to participants of all ages for the first time in the CCC Great Hall. Partnered folk dancing to live music provided by Robbie and Bliss McIntosh, contra dance provides a social evening, meeting people, making new friends and obtaining the benefits of good exercise, all set to music.
A caller, Fern Bradley, will guide new and experienced dancers through a variety of dances. Having much experience in this field, Ms. Bradley will teach each dance before it is actually set to music. These traditional dances set to reels or jigs have been part of our culture since colonial times. Contra dancing is not the same as contemporary country line dancing. It is a form of English country dancing that gained recognition in the late 17th century and found its way to the "new world". The French, too, thoroughly enjoyed this form of dance and referred to it as "contradans" - a term that found its way to the colonies and evolved into "contra dance".
No experience is necessary to participate in or enjoy this experience. More experienced dancers are always willing to assist, and as caller, Ms. Bradley will lead the dances while they are being done to the music. Dancers will be able to perform each movement to the music with confidence. Admission is $8 for adults, $3 for age 21 and younger with a special family rate of $15. To reserve a space, please contact the CCC at 581-854-7053.

New Faces in the CCC Pottery Studio
Salem artist, Bob Nopper, who has most capably assisted the Courthouse Community Center Pottery Studio in Salem as instructor and manager for over 5 years, has stepped down to focus on his food and pottery businesses. The CCC thanks him for his many years of valued service and wishes him happiness and success in his new ventures. Bob has been a good friend, and his skills and knowledge have advanced the focus of the Pottery Studio in many ways.
The CCC is pleased to announce the addition of accomplished potter, Jordan Becker, to oversee the Pottery Studio. A Bennington College graduate, Jordan left the stress of living in Manhattan as a resident artist to return to his country roots, finding inspiration and a healthier lifestyle in the Battenkill Valley area. At the CCC, Jordan looks forward to teaching local folks about the amazing properties of clay. Jordan said "to have the ability to shape a material into a hand made object that when fired will add beauty and outlive you seems divine". A very talented artist, Jordan has recently completed construction of a wood-fired kiln at Salem Art Works and oversees their new ceramics program as well. The CCC loves his energy and enthusiasm and looks forward to a creative partnership.
The CCC also welcomes Eva Fitzgerald and Sarah Gomer. A seasoned instructor and Hebron resident, Eva studied sculpture and ceramics at Bennington College and brings a fresh perspective to her classes. She focuses on children's classes and provides her students with the necessary instruction to create functional and sculptural art work with clay. Eva looks forward to providing exciting learning opportunities and beneficial hands-on experience. Sarah too, is an artist new to the area and will assist Jordan with his many management responsibilities.
