In the recent months alone, the Shoppe has given funds in support of the Courthouse Annual Appeal, the Salem Fuel Fund and the Salem Food Pantry. Their program to provide grants for the Salem Central School is supporting $3,500 worth of requests including field trips, band books, IPads, After Prom Party, Backpack program and a performance of the Saratoga Opera Company on April 3. GENEROSITY OF THE SHOPPE OFF BROADWAY
The Shoppe Off Broadway management team was happy to report that the summer of 2013 was astonishing. The donations of gently used items were very generous allowing the Shoppe to honor its mission to support the youth of the area. Once again, the Shoppe provided a scholarship for a lucky graduating senior of the Salem Central School. The Shoppe was also able to be extremely generous and supportive of the Lunch, Learn & Play program. Earlier in the season, it provided the funds necessary to install new overhead lighting in the Youth Center – what a difference! As if that wasn’t enough, it also donated $7,500 to assist with funding Lunch, Learn & Play. Over 120 area children reaped the benefits of this amazing program this year.
The Shoppe did incur a minor setback when the first floor toilet tank cracked over the weekend of July 13, and the continuously flowing water flooded areas of the first floor and the basement. Fortunately, the damage was covered by insurance, and repairs are underway. Most of the damage was “behind the scenes”, and business was never interrupted.
Plans are underway for the annual “Christmas in November Holiday Bazaar” scheduled for Saturday, November 9 from 10 am until 2 pm. Once again, the Great Hall of the Courthouse will be stocked from floor to ceiling with holiday items of all descriptions. This much anticipated event will provide bargain hunters with a treasure-trove of goodies. Shoppe workers always look forward to this special event and encourage everyone to “Shop the Shoppe!”

Many Hands Providing for the Salem Community
The Shoppe Off Broadway, located in the white house next to the Courthouse Community Center, is small, but mighty. Three original volunteers, Betty Campbell, Nancy Gadzinski, and Sue Keyes oversee a band of fifteen regular volunteers and six subs. These women log in over 200 hours each month. They accept, sort and price donations, and keep the rooms in pleasing order. Their good works allow The Shoppe to fund several worthy projects.
One of the reasons for the Shoppe's success is the very reasonable prices placed on clothing, books, household goods, jewelry and toys. The number of customers varies, but four rooms of merchandise are always bustling with people checking out the ever-changing array of articles for sale. On bag sale days, a line is formed at the door as shoppers wait to snatch up bargains.
The community has been incredibly supportive of the thrift store's mission to provide monies for Courthouse building improvements, the Lunch, Learn & Play summer program, graduate awards, and aid to families in need. This fall a new SWA grant program is being instituted to provide school employees an opportunity to apply for funds to help with classroom expenses. All money raised in the Shoppe stays in the community and is tax deductible. Keep those much needed and appreciated donations coming!
Thanks to The Shoppe and Ron Jameson's Company, the Youth Barn's dirt floor is being replaced with concrete. This is another step in the many upgrades made to the yellow North Barn which houses the K-6 summer program.
The Shoppe Off Broadway will celebrate its eighth anniversary with a free customer drawing for two donated sterling silver bracelets. One Salem graduating senior, a good kid who helps others, will receive The Shoppe's Spirit of Volunteerism Award this June.
The Shoppe Off Broadway is a success story, a true Salem community endeavor with a collaborative heart of gold!
