Northumbrian smallpiper Dick Hensold and bassoonist Rosalind Buda perform a rollicking blend of traditional Celtic tunes, early music, and original pieces, lushly arranged in an innovative and musical style—and all delivered with technical flair, joyful ease, and a variety of instruments.   Both musicians have spent years playing the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Northumberland, and Brittany, and were highly-trained classical musicians before that, so the performance is informed by a deep study of the music's history, and infused with a sensitive musicality.

The show highlights the virtuosity of the performers: Dick is the leading Northumbrian smallpiper in North America, and Rosalind’s facility on bassoon (M.M., New England Conservatory) has to be heard to be believed. A third of the concert is songs, featuring Rosalind’s light soprano and Dick’s conversational bass, and audiences are amazed by the range of tones and expression in what is essentially a bagpipe concert.   In addition to the rare pairing of Northumbrian smallpipes with bassoon, you will hear duets for smallpipes (Scottish and Northumbrian), Breton tunes for pipes and bombard, Border pipe duets, and songs accompanied by pipes and whistles.

Live! Folklife Concerts are hosted, produced, and funded by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library, offered free to the public thanks to grant funding from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.
